Matthew 23;12 - The pharisees served others in hopes that they would be recognized for what they'd done. We have to admit, that, at times, that may motivate our service as well. So how do we deal with that attitude? Pastor Dave addresses that in his message today.

[00:00:00] We'll talk about service last couple of days and I want to reiterate what it says in verse 11 and 12 of Matthew 23. The greatest among you shall be your servant. We talked about that yesterday. Now this is the verse we want to focus on today. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be
[00:00:30] exalted. Jesus talked about this very thing regarding the Pharisees because of Pharisees seemed to exalt themselves all the time. They wanted people's attention, they wanted people to know just how a service oriented they were, they wanted adulation and exaltation and people say wow look at you
[00:00:48] and so Jesus in retrospective that kind of contradicting that says these words. Now what can we say about service itself? About when we humble ourselves and serve one another in love. First of all we can
[00:01:02] say that it focuses our attention off of ourselves onto the need of others right? It goes against the grain or the natural tendency that all of us are born with to be served instead of serving right?
[00:01:16] And so what attitude should we have when we serve? Well we shall have the attitude that we don't get anything in return that we don't expect. Somebody to say something about what we've done.
[00:01:26] We may not even expect it. Thank you. Many of you have done things for other people and I talked to a guy recently who said, you know I've done so many different things for so many people and there
[00:01:35] seems to be a lack of appreciation regarding what I do. He said it seems to be the natural tendency of most people these days. Yes. We live in a very self-centered age and as Christianity declines
[00:01:51] in America people are going to become more self-centered and self-focused. It just goes naturally with our sinful inclinations and the old Adam. What puts that to death? Repetence and faith in
[00:02:04] Jesus to drown our sin in the blood of Christ and to rise up with connection to the resurrection of Jesus to rise up to a new life. So here's the bottom line of our devotion today. It's very
[00:02:16] simple, short and straightforward. Be a servant to one another and don't expect people to say wow look at you. Now I know that if you have Christ in you and the Holy Spirit is empowering you
[00:02:28] I don't know one Christian that outwardly says the reason I do this is because I want people to notice no but we put that attitude to death and when adulation, exaltation, thank you, recognition doesn't
[00:02:42] come. That's okay. The motivation we're doing this service is because we love Jesus and we've been set free by the blood of Christ. We're forgiven, we're redeemed, we're accepted, we're headed to heaven and that's the single motivation for service honestly straightforwardly and purely.
[00:03:02] It's because what Christ has done for us. And so once again Jesus says in this text whoever humbles himself will be exalted and whoever exalts himself will be humbled, serve the Lord by serving others
[00:03:16] with all humility not expecting anything in return but doing it out of gratitude for what Christ has done for you. Got it? Got it. And that is today's daily truth. Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ.
