Matthew 22:41-45 - Jesus asks a very riddle-like question that the pharisees can't answer. Pastor Dave takes it apart and explains and applies it in the podcast today.

[00:00:00] We'll truth, Daily This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman Hi everybody welcome back to Daily Truths Theological Gymnastics That's a $10 word right? $10 phrase Yeah, Theological Gymnastics Jesus played that with the Pharisees in our text before us
[00:00:21] Now we've got to talk about real quickly what happened to Jesus just a couple days ago in our devotion Remember they gave us softball question right? What's the summary of the law on the prophets
[00:00:31] And Jesus nailed it of course, which he knew since he was a tiny baby And of course he's the one who authored that commandment to love the Lord your God with all your heart so in mind And your neighbor is yourself so they gave him that softball question
[00:00:44] Now Jesus turns the tables a little bit and has a softball question No not a softball question a theological gymnastics question for the Pharisees And here it is we pick up verse 41 now while the Pharisees were gathered together
[00:01:00] Jesus asked them a question saying what do you think about the Christ? Who's son is he? They said to him the son of David We added devotion about that a couple days ago He's now here it is in verse 43
[00:01:12] He said to them how is it then that David in the spirit calls him Lord saying the Lord said to my Lord Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet If then David calls him Lord how is he his son?
[00:01:30] Let's take this part, okay So first of all it says this in verse 43 How is it then that David in the spirit empowered and controlled by the Holy Spirit calls Jesus Lord Saying this listen to this this is verse 44 the Lord namely God the Father had a conversation
[00:01:51] The Lord said to my Lord namely Jesus the son of God in the the glories of heaven before Jesus ever came to planet earth
[00:02:01] The Lord said to Jesus the Father said to Jesus sit at my right hand and when it when we think about the words sit at my right hand
[00:02:10] He means be my power my emissary my representative my ambassador when you go to planet earth my will my desire my goal for you son is to go to planet earth The safe rescue and redeem mankind. That's what I need you to do that's what it means positionally
[00:02:26] Jesus sat at the right hand of God the Father and was sent to planet earth to be his emissary his representative his ambassador The one who would take our place on the cross. So the Lord God the Father said to my Lord namely Jesus
[00:02:40] Sit at my right hand be my ambassador until I put your enemies under your feet now who was the enemies of Jesus? The Roman government the Pharisees said he sees the scribes the Jewish nation sin death and the power of the devil right all of those were Jesus
[00:02:58] enemies and he defeated them through his death through his life death and resurrection Of course the Pharisees wanted to get rid of Jesus so did the Roman government because they were threatened by his power
[00:03:10] And so they relegated him to a common criminals cross, but this was carrying out and executing the will of God ultimately right And when Jesus went to the cross right he carried our sin
[00:03:23] He conquered death through his resurrection. He defeated Satan and gives us life everlasting and so through his life Death and resurrection Jesus has defeated his enemies and oh, yes by the way his enemies are
[00:03:40] And they've been defeated the picture here is like in in Jesus day when an army would defeat another army that captain or the king would go to the Deposed enemy and literally lay his knee on the deposed neck of one of those folks that he had defeated
[00:03:59] And then he would lift up his sword and he'd say I'm the conqueror. I'm the winner This is what Jesus did through his life death and resurrection. He holds up the sword of victory
[00:04:10] And he says I'm the victor. I'm the winner. I'm the conqueror and we by faith Hitch our life on to him and we say we're the champions because Christ is our ultimate champion Defeating sin and hell and death I love it so the Lord said to my Lord
[00:04:26] Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies. We already talked about what those are under your feet If then David calls him Lord How is he his son? Who what a riddle question that is theological gymnastics
[00:04:43] So basically Jesus is saying if he's the son of God and promise Messiah How can he also be a son or a descendant of David and so Jesus basically is saying he's both God and
[00:04:55] And man a descendant of David but also the promise Messiah set by God to save and rescue and redeem Lost in sinful mankind how cool is this passage? So in summary today We're talking about this theological gymnastics that Jesus had with the religious leaders, right
[00:05:16] But the ultimate truth is that Jesus was both God and man and came to defeat our enemies That he did just that so ultimate bottom line of Presentation today Jesus is both God and he's man
[00:05:30] He was a man to place himself under the law and to die in the cross and he's God to carry our sin and make proper payment for a sin and to conquer death Thanks be to God that Jesus is both God and man and he's the promise
[00:05:45] Savior. He's the promise Redeemer in King. He's your Lord. You're King. You're Savior Embrace him by faith today and live for him all the rest of your days and that is today's
