The Ultimate Relay Race | John 17:8

[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily. This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman. Hi everybody, welcome back to Daily Truths. Today I want to talk about the ultimate relay race. And you're probably familiar with the fact that relay races consist of like four people usually. One runs a leg and then he passed the baton to the next person. He runs a leg of the relay race and then he passes the baton on to the next person and so forth and so on.

[00:00:28] Usually it consists of four people. It could be the 440 or the 880 or whatever it is. But a relay race consists of passing on the baton to the next person. And usually when they do that, when they're ready to pass on the baton and they're approaching the guy who's going to receive it, they say, go! Like that. Well, what's the ultimate relay race?

[00:00:51] Jesus identifies part of it here in verse 8 of John 17. Listen to this. He's talking about the Father. He's talking with the Father and he says this about his disciples. He says,

[00:01:16] In other words, God the Father gave Jesus the words and the work to carry out. He shared those words with his disciples. They believed and came to know God the Father and believed that God the Father sent the Son. So that's the two legs of the relay race. The gospel and the words of the gospel. The word of God was passed on to Jesus from the Father and then he passed it on to the disciples.

[00:01:43] Now here's where the relay race really gets interesting because we have received the teachings of the apostles from the New Testament, right? It's like the apostles through the word were saying to us, go! And the baton of the gospel has been passed on to us. But now what do we do with it? Here's the fourth leg. We receive the gospel by faith in Jesus, knowing indeed that Christ came to the world to save us,

[00:02:10] that the Father dispatched Jesus to this world to save us. We believe that because the proclamation of the word of God given to us by the apostles in the Holy Scriptures. And now what do we do with that? We share that with people who do not or may not know who Jesus is, especially those who are close to us. That's the fourth leg of the relay race, right?

[00:02:35] And so when God presents people into our lives, whether it's people in our families or in our workplace or at school or in our communities or in the neighborhood or next door neighbors, whoever it is, when God brings those people into our lives and the Holy Spirit opens the door for us to testify of the grace of God, what do we do? It's like we're handing off the baton in the fourth leg of the relay race saying, go!

[00:03:00] In other words, go and by the power of the Holy Spirit receive Jesus as Savior, as I have received him as Savior given to me by the power of the word passed on through the apostles. So there you go. The ultimate relay race. God the Father has passed the word on to Jesus.

[00:03:20] Jesus passed the word on to his disciples. The disciples have passed the word on to us and we pass the word on to others who may not know Jesus as Savior. So that's the ultimate relay race. Look for opportunities to share the fourth leg of the relay race with people that you know that may not or you know do not accept Jesus as Savior.

[00:03:46] And look for opportunities to testify of the amazing, astounding, wonderful, incomparable grace that God has given us through his Son. Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ and thank God for the ultimate relay race. Have a great day. Thank you for tuning in to Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman.
