[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily. This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman.

[00:00:07] My friend, has your mind and heart ever been so sorrowful and overwhelmed by the things that lay ahead of you that you could hardly stand it? That you were overwhelmed with grief? That you were anxiety ridden? That you couldn't sleep because of what you were facing?

[00:00:24] In the book of Matthew, chapter 26, and remember Jesus has gone to the Garden of Gethsemane.

[00:00:29] He's asked three of his disciples, Peter, James, and John, to stay up with him, watch, and pray.

[00:00:35] And then this is what it says in verse 17,

[00:00:38] And talking with them, Peter taking with him, Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

[00:00:46] Then he said to them, my soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch with me.

[00:00:55] So Jesus went off a little bit away from them. They were off to the side. They were praying. They were trying to stay awake.

[00:01:02] But Jesus was sorrowful and overwhelmed with grief. Why is that?

[00:01:08] It's because he could see what was going to happen. He knew that in just a few short hours, maybe minutes, a detachment of soldiers and Jewish leaders would come and apprehend him and arrest him and put him to trial.

[00:01:21] He could see in the future that he would be facing death, not just any kind of death, an excruciatingly painful death by crucifixion.

[00:01:30] He could see that he would have the weight of the world's sins weighing on his shoulders.

[00:01:35] He could see that he'd be totally separated from God, experiencing pangs of hell on that cross.

[00:01:41] He could see that the wrath of God would be placed on him. He could see it all. No wonder he was overwhelmed with sorrow and grief.

[00:01:52] But he's willing to do it. He was willing to face it. Why?

[00:01:58] Because he knew that our salvation was at stake.

[00:02:02] The book of Hebrews chapter 12 says this,

[00:02:05] Therefore, since we're surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and every sin that so easily entangles us,

[00:02:13] and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

[00:02:17] Listen to this.

[00:02:22] The joy set before him.

[00:02:27] What joy was there in a crucifixion?

[00:02:30] What joy was there in total separation from God?

[00:02:33] What joy was there in being arrested and not receiving fair treatment or a fair trial?

[00:02:39] What joy was found in that?

[00:02:40] It's because he knew what it would bring.

[00:02:43] He knew that if he faced it, he knew that if he went to the cross, he knew that if he died in our place, we would have eternal salvation.

[00:02:51] So yes, he was sorrowful.

[00:02:53] Yes, he was overwhelmed with grief.

[00:02:54] But he did it because he did it for us.

[00:02:59] He faced it.

[00:03:00] He went through the sorrow.

[00:03:02] He went through the pain.

[00:03:04] He went through the grief.

[00:03:05] He went through the separation from God because he knew if he went to the cross, he would win salvation for you and me.

[00:03:15] And so yes, he was sorrowful.

[00:03:17] But he experienced it for you and me so that we could go to heaven so that our sins could be forgiven so that he we could have this relationship with God.

[00:03:28] That the gates of hell cannot prevail against my friends.

[00:03:32] And here's another thing I want you to know when you're sorrowful or troubled or overwhelmed with whatever you're experiencing in life, you never ever face it alone.

[00:03:42] The presence, power, authority, strength and guiding principles of the word of God in the presence of Jesus is there with you in the face of everything you go through in life.

[00:03:54] He faced the sorrow.

[00:03:56] He faced the grief.

[00:03:58] And he did it for you.

[00:03:59] And when you're going through difficult times, too, he's there by your side, taking you by the hand and leading you through.

[00:04:08] Thanks be to God for our suffering servant, our mighty savior who carried our sin, defeated death for you and me and is by our side with every sorrowful experience we have in life.

[00:04:22] Thanks be to God.

[00:04:23] What a friend.

[00:04:25] What a friend we have in Jesus.

[00:04:27] And that is today's Daily Truth.

[00:04:29] Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ.
