[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily
[00:00:02] This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman
[00:00:07] Hi everybody, welcome back to Daily Truths. We're in Matthew chapter 26 and remember Jesus has been anointed with oil by Mary in a little town by the name of Bethany and the disciples, especially Judas. We're complaining about how that money could have been used for the poor and then we pick up this verse in verse 14 of Matthew chapter 26.
[00:00:24] Then one of the twelve whose name was Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests. Okay, what was his purpose? Well, you know what his purpose was, to betray the Son of God. Now, what can we say about Judas Iscariot? A lot of times people say, what's this Iscariot thing? We know that there were two Judases that were disciples. One was Judas Iscariot and the other one was the other Judas. Who was Judas Iscariot? Why the word or the name Iscariot?
[00:00:51] Well, Judas came from Carioth Iscariot, which another name for that is Iscariot, right? It's a town in Judea. And so to separate and distinguish this Judas from the other Judas, they said Judas Iscariot from Carioth Iscariot, right? Now, remember Jesus of Nazareth was called Jesus of Nazareth. Why did they say that? To distinguish him from other Jesuses that were from other towns, right?
[00:01:16] This was the only disciple. Judas Iscariot was the only disciple, interestingly, from Judea. All the other eleven disciples were from Galilee, around the Sea of Galilee, that Galilean region. Judas Iscariot was the only one from Judea. I think that's very interesting. Now, what can we say about him? And we're going to talk a lot more about this in the coming days. What can we say about him? First of all, he was an idolater. He loved money.
[00:01:42] And tomorrow we're going to be talking about possible other motivations as to why he betrayed Jesus. And they're all possibilities. They're all speculational. We're really not sure why he betrayed Jesus, except we can surely say he wanted the money and he loved money.
[00:01:56] Remember, what was his position with the disciples? He was the treasure. So we can say he was an idolater. Now, the Bible says that Satan had entered him to cause him to do what he did. The bottom line is we can say that Judas really wasn't on board with Jesus' mission and ministry. Maybe he thought that Jesus was going to establish an earthly kingdom. And he could see that fading away as time went by.
[00:02:20] But the bottom line is he was not a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Right? Now, what can we say about us regarding the life of Judas? How can it apply to us? Well, sometimes we're idolaters too. Sometimes things take precedence and priority in our life. We fear, love, and trust other things or other people more than God. We have to say that. And we have to repent of that. Idolatry is a sin.
[00:02:45] Again, the first commandment says to love the Lord. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. The first commandment says in so many times in our life, we have other gods that take precedence and priority, love and affection over our devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ. So we have to repent of that. Secondly, Satan sometimes enters us, maybe not like it did Judas, but causes us to do things that we normally wouldn't say, normally wouldn't do, normally wouldn't think of. Why?
[00:03:13] Because he's bent on throwing temptations at us. And because we're born with that sin nature, sometimes our sin nature says, yeah, that really looks good. And so Satan sometimes has his way with us. However, what do we believe about Jesus that's separate and distinct from Judas Iscariot?
[00:03:30] We believe he is who he claimed to be. We believe he's the Messiah who didn't come to fix our lives and to take away our problems, but to go to a cross to die for sin and then to rise again to defeat death so that the gates of heaven could be open to us and we have forgiveness of sins.
[00:03:50] Because this is who Jesus is. We believe, teach and confess that he's the Son of God, the Savior of the world. And as a result of our faith in him, redeemed, loved, accepted and forgiven.
[00:04:05] So that is marvelous news. Really, really marvelous news. Now, here's a question sometimes I'm asked, and I'll probably talk about this in other episodes.
[00:04:14] What if, what if Judas would have said, oh my goodness, I really messed up, Lord Jesus. I should have never done what I did. What was I thinking? I'm so sorry.
[00:04:24] What if he would have repented and affirmed his faith in Jesus as the Messiah? He would have been saved, right?
[00:04:30] We're going to talk about Peter and of course what he did denying Jesus apart from what Judas did betraying Jesus.
[00:04:38] Both of them are sins, but both of them are not, listen to this, unforgivable.
[00:04:43] As a matter of fact, I had a conversation with someone recently who was told that because he had done a certain thing in his life, which is really tough,
[00:04:51] this person told this individual, hey, that's not forgiven by God. Listen to me.
[00:04:56] There is no sin that is not forgiven by God except the sin of unbelief.
[00:05:02] That's the sin against the Holy Spirit. If a person perpetually all their life rejects the claims of Christ,
[00:05:10] how can they be accepted and forgiven? Because faith is that which appropriates what Christ has done.
[00:05:16] So the only unforgivable sin, my friends, is unbelief.
[00:05:21] Right? And we'd have to say that that's who Judas was.
[00:05:24] He never really had saving faith in Jesus.
[00:05:27] Otherwise, he surely would not have betrayed him for 30 pieces of silver.
[00:05:31] And we'll go into that much more in the days ahead.
[00:05:34] All right. That is today's Daily Truth.
[00:05:36] Bottom line is sometimes we're idolaters.
[00:05:38] Sometimes Satan has his way with us.
[00:05:40] But Jesus is our Savior.
[00:05:42] He died for sins, took them away, and we're still okay in a right relationship with God.
[00:05:47] Bask in that today. Rejoice in that today.
[00:05:49] And if the Holy Spirit opens the opportunity and door, share that with someone today.
[00:05:55] That is today's Daily Truth.
[00:05:57] Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ.
