Until He Comes - Part 2 | Acts 1:6-11

[00:00:00] We'll truth, Daily This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman

[00:00:07] Secondly, Be empowered. Be empowered. I love this. Jesus told us disciples but you'll receive power in this tax. You'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Now, when was that?

[00:00:24] About 10 days later, to be exact on Pinnacost day. All the followers of Jesus were assembled in one room and the Spirit of God descended and they were empowered to proclaim the gospel.

[00:00:39] And that's what happened. Now when were you empowered to share the gospel? For most of us it was in our baptism.

[00:00:47] But you might have been converted to Christianity through the power of the Word and when that word descended on you, so did the Holy Spirit so that you were empowered to testify of the grace of God.

[00:01:00] You see the Holy Spirit became your engine, moving, impeling, motivating and powering you down, down the road for the Lord Jesus Christ.

[00:01:11] So that you not only could believe in Him but also have your faith fed and be equipped to share your faith with other people. So we've been empowered. How many of you, some of you are old enough to remember this? How many of you remember the show, candid camera?

[00:01:28] I shared this in Bible class a few weeks ago. In this particular show, candid camera, the spoof was on the gas station attendant and those of you who are pretty young, there used to be a day when you would pull into a gas station believe it or not.

[00:01:45] And a person would come out and salute you and put gas in your car. How many of you remember those days, right? And they had a little tie on remember this and their shirt was white. I always wondered why do you wear white shirt at a gas station okay, but they did, okay, and they salute you and you'd say go ahead and fill her up. Oh can you check under the under the hood and check my oil.

[00:02:10] So the spoof was on the gas station attendant, this guy comes in, rolls in, you know, the attendant comes out, the salute may help you, man. She said yes, could you fill it up with regular? And also, could you check under the hood and check my oil. So he powers around, he props up the hood. There was no engine. No engine there.

[00:02:36] This guy is around, says to the woman he said, there's no engine in your engine compartment. She said, oh really? Well, could you put one in real quick? I'm kind of in a hurry. I mean, he said, man, I can't do that. Okay. Why do I share that story with you because the Holy Spirit is the engine that brings us to faith, that equips us to live a godly life, that continues to feed our faith through word and soccer.

[00:03:06] The engine so that we have power to testify of the grace of God. You think about pinacost and Peter gave this incredible marvelous, unparalleled sermon, testifying of the grace of God, convicting those who are in part responsible for the crucifixion of Christ.

[00:03:23] He empowered by the Holy Spirit, testifies what Christ has done and 3000 people come to know Jesus is Lord and Savior. You know that the mission statement of our churches grow in Christ, grow in Christ,

[00:03:38] and we have power to do that in the Holy Spirit. And what happens when you come to church? It's like you're saying, holy spirit, fill her up, fill me with your power, with your presence,

[00:03:55] with the security and identity that's rooted in Christ, but fill me up with your spirit, holy spirit, working through the word, working through the sacrament, so that I'm empowered to share my faith with others who need to know Jesus is desperately.

[00:04:11] Whose lives are tarnished by sin, whose lives are purposeless and empty, whose lives desperately need to know that there is a God who loves them,

[00:04:22] who dispatched his son to the cross to die for them. You see most people on planet Earth don't know this God that we know.

[00:04:30] Don't know the power that's given to us in the Holy Spirit. Don't recognize our own sin and their need for a Savior, and we are sent empowered by the Holy Spirit to testify of that one.

[00:04:43] You lived and died and rose again to save us from the guilt power and punishment of sin. And so we're empowered, okay? So don't guess we don't know when Christ is going to come back,

[00:04:57] be empowered and we are. We're empowered by the Holy Spirit to testify the grace of God,

[00:05:02] and then finally don't wait. Don't wait to tell others about Jesus, especially when the Holy Spirit opens the door.

[00:05:11] Now this is what Jesus said to his disciples, he said, you're to be my witnesses and where were they to start?

[00:05:21] You're to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Somaria, and to the other most parts of the earth.

[00:05:31] What is Jesus telling us? He said, you are to be by witnesses. Now let's take that apart real quickly.

[00:05:39] These guys that Jesus said this to were witnesses to what? All the things that he did,

[00:05:46] the main line disciples, those of the inner circle, the 11 or 12 disciples, had witnessed Jesus to incredible things.

[00:05:55] Like cleanse lepers, give sight to the blind, cause the deaf to hear, cause the lame to walk even raised the dead

[00:06:02] and they were listed at this. They were witnesses. I witness is to all of that.

[00:06:10] But not only that, they recognized the fact that he was crucified on a cross and then came back to life three days later.

[00:06:20] And then they were witnesses to his teachings and his miracles that followed. They saw it all.

[00:06:27] And what did Jesus say? You guys have seen it! Look at what I've done! You're eyewitnesses, not only to my miracles but my death and resurrection.

[00:06:40] Thomas, you've put your hands in my side, your hands in my hand. And you said that I'm the Lord and I'm the God of creation.

[00:06:49] Tell others! You've seen it! Tell others! It all yes by the way, man. And women don't wait. The Holy Spirit is going to descend on you in ten days.

[00:07:06] And when that happens, as the Spirit of God opens the door, walk through that door and testify of me.

[00:07:15] And sure enough, one day came, two days came, five days came, finally ten days later. All that disciples were gathered together.

[00:07:22] We're going to talk about this next week and what happened. The Spirit of God descended, tongues of fire were on top their heads.

[00:07:28] They proclaimed the Word of God and peoples' native tongues, and then Peter gave it an incredible message.

[00:07:34] As some people asked, what's going on? Are you guys drunk? And do you know what Peter said? It's only nine o'clock in the morning.

[00:07:41] Who gets drunk this early? But no, this is a fulfillment of prophecy that the Spirit of God has descended on us.

[00:07:48] And we're going to tell you that Jesus Christ died and rose again and through faith in Him, you are saved.

[00:07:57] That was the day. He didn't wait as the Spirit of God would, oh right! I mean, it's like the Spirit was saying, now Peter, get on the horse, open your mouth.

[00:08:18] I'm feeling, and he did. There are people in your life that are receptive and ready and waiting, believe me, to hear the gospel.

[00:08:33] And as you interact with them, the Holy Spirit will nudge you a little bit, as if to say, now, tell them, let them know,

[00:08:48] and when He opens the door, will you open your mouth and testify what Christ means to you personally? You've heard me say many times in the last year and a half I've been here.

[00:09:01] To all as we prepare to give a testimony of the hope that lives within you. Do you have your story down of what Jesus means to you?

[00:09:10] And you talk about sin and you talk about separation and you talk about God's sending His Son and you talk about what Jesus did through his death and resurrection.

[00:09:19] And then you talk about repentance and then you talk about faith and then you say, do you believe this?

[00:09:26] Friends, the time is now.

[00:09:30] And when the Holy Spirit opens the door, we shouldn't wait like Pastor Dave did one time.

[00:09:35] Holy cow, let me tell you this story. So this lady calls me on the phone and she says, pastor, my uncle is in a nursing home. He's not in very good shape, but he's very much ready to hear what you have to say about Jesus.

[00:09:49] And when you go and see Him, I said, oh, oh yeah, I will.

[00:09:54] But I had stuff going on that day and I had a couple of appointments and I wanted to get home early to see my wife and kids.

[00:10:04] I went to the nursing home the next day and that man had died.

[00:10:14] Oh, I was horrible. So I said, I'm not going to have that happen again.

[00:10:23] When the Holy Spirit opens the door for me to testify of God's grace, I won't wait, I won't put it off.

[00:10:29] So there was a guy in my previous congregation, a guy by the name of Mark Seymour, who owned his own company and he had hired this fellow from Czechoslovakia.

[00:10:38] His name was Leon and Mark would continue to testify the grace of God to Leon and tell him about the Lord Jesus

[00:10:46] and invite him to church and all this stuff. And Leon and that Czechoslovakia in accident say, oh, I don't want that stuff.

[00:10:52] Good bother me. I don't need that Jesus you're talking about all this kind of stuff but Mark never quit inviting him to church.

[00:11:01] Well, guess what? Leon was diagnosed with cancer and he continued to get worse and worse and worse.

[00:11:10] And I saw him many times in the hospital and I told him about the Lord Jesus.

[00:11:15] And a few times he just said, I don't want to hear that, please leave. He was so resistant.

[00:11:22] But we continued to pray. His physical health continued to deteriorate.

[00:11:28] And we thought, Lord Jesus, you're going to call him soon, it seems open up the Holy Spirit's door.

[00:11:35] Holy Spirit opened up the door so that this man comes to faith.

[00:11:39] And then it looked like he was going to die in a day or two and we started praying that the Lord went a long day to his life.

[00:11:46] And even yes, at least for a time, heal him of his affliction and guess what happened?

[00:11:52] That's exactly what happened. He got better and better.

[00:12:01] And a week later, he was out of the hospital and a week later he was back at work.

[00:12:06] And guess what? Mark said, now are you ready to receive Jesus this Savior and Lord?

[00:12:14] No, I don't want that. Well, guess what?

[00:12:19] Going back to the hospital about a month or two later, I told him about the Lord Jesus.

[00:12:25] And he said, I'll think about it. The next day he called up Mark and he said, Mark, I'm in.

[00:12:35] I know Jesus is my Savior and Lord and Redeemer and King, I'm in the next day, died.

[00:12:43] Guys, I'm telling you when the Holy Spirit says, now don't wait.

[00:12:55] Testify what I've done. Tell people about an incredible Savior who died in rows again, who defeated death and he is the only way!
