[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman.

[00:00:07] Hi everybody, welcome back to Daily Truths.

[00:00:10] Question for you today.

[00:00:12] Why did Jesus come to this world?

[00:00:16] Now I know you probably know the answer but maybe you don't and if you went to your

[00:00:21] downtown area and you are a roving reporter and you'd ask people why did Jesus of Nazareth

[00:00:27] come here?

[00:00:28] What was the purpose of his life?

[00:00:30] Why did he do what he did?

[00:00:32] Some people would give the good gospel answer but many people would not.

[00:00:37] They would say he came here to spread good cheer and to show a moral way to live your

[00:00:43] life or get a wise philosophy regarding how to live life and how to interact with other

[00:00:49] people.

[00:00:50] And of course, Jesus gets us movement or whatever it's called.

[00:00:55] Jesus shows Jesus as a moral character who lived a life of service to other people and

[00:00:59] all of that is true but is that the ultimate reason why Jesus came to planet earth?

[00:01:08] Jesus identified it best when he said this in Matthew 20 verse 28.

[00:01:14] And this is our verse for today.

[00:01:16] For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom

[00:01:25] for many.

[00:01:26] Let's take that verse apart.

[00:01:28] First of all, it says that the Son of Man did not come to be served.

[00:01:31] In other words, Jesus is the Son of God, the Holy One, the Promised Messiah.

[00:01:35] He had every right to tell people not only who he was but hey, it's all about me coming

[00:01:41] to door worship and serve me.

[00:01:43] I'm the Son of God.

[00:01:44] I'm the Savior of the world.

[00:01:45] I'm the Promised Messiah.

[00:01:46] Come and minister to me.

[00:01:48] No.

[00:01:49] Jesus said it best when he said the Son of Man did not come to be served.

[00:01:53] That others might pay attention and do whatever they could for him.

[00:01:56] That comes later.

[00:01:58] But he didn't come to be served but rather to serve, he said in this text.

[00:02:03] So when you think about the life of Jesus, that's exactly what he did.

[00:02:07] He was always entirely others centered.

[00:02:11] He came to serve other people by healing them, by preaching to them, by encouraging them,

[00:02:18] by focusing them on God, on and on and on.

[00:02:21] Of course, raising the dead, we can go on and on and on about how Jesus served people

[00:02:26] when he was here.

[00:02:27] The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.

[00:02:30] And then ultimately that service led to where?

[00:02:33] But to give his life as a ransom for many, we know that his life was sacrificed on the cross

[00:02:42] of Calvary.

[00:02:43] And it was there a ransom was paid to rescue and deliver us, to free us from the guilt,

[00:02:50] power and punishment of sin.

[00:02:53] Let me say that again, to free us, to pay ransom to God, to free us from the guilt of our

[00:02:59] sins so that it's forgiven, from the punishment of sin which is hell itself, and the power

[00:03:04] of sin so that we're no longer slaves of sin but slaves of righteousness.

[00:03:08] Where did Christ make that ransom?

[00:03:11] At the cross.

[00:03:12] And after six agonizing hours on the cross, he said, the ransom is paid.

[00:03:17] It is finished.

[00:03:18] I've carried sin, I've experienced death, I've conquered the devil, I've conquered the

[00:03:23] grave, I'm going to rise for the dead.

[00:03:26] Salvation is won.

[00:03:27] It is done.

[00:03:29] The ransom is paid.

[00:03:32] Now what do we have as a result of that?

[00:03:35] As a result of Christ paying our ransom?

[00:03:37] We have the forgiveness of sins.

[00:03:39] We have a relationship with God.

[00:03:41] We have the promise of where we're going to go when we leave planet earth.

[00:03:45] We know we're going to be in heaven.

[00:03:47] We know salvation is secure.

[00:03:49] This is why Christ came and here's another thing.

[00:03:52] Where was that ransom paid?

[00:03:53] Well, we're already set it was at the cross but where was it paid to?

[00:03:57] To whom was it paid?

[00:03:59] Not to the devil.

[00:04:02] Something theologians believe he made that ransom, that payment to the devil.

[00:04:05] No, he made that ransom and payment to God because the payment for sin was a holy sacrifice

[00:04:11] on the cross and that's what Jesus rendered.

[00:04:14] And so at the cross he made that payment, that ransom to God to rescue, deliver and free

[00:04:20] us.

[00:04:22] So but what is Jesus doing now to continue to serve us?

[00:04:26] He serves us through the Word.

[00:04:28] He serves us through the sacrament.

[00:04:30] The very body and blood that was broken and spilled out on the cross is given to us in

[00:04:34] the bread and wine of communion.

[00:04:36] He serves us by blessing us with great joy, the food in our table and the roof over

[00:04:42] our head and the clothes on our back and the friends on our life and the family members.

[00:04:46] He continues to service with so many blessings.

[00:04:49] This is why Christ came.

[00:04:51] He came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

[00:05:00] So tonight here's your take-home point.

[00:05:02] Thank God for the gift of God's only son, Jesus Christ.

[00:05:07] Maybe I told you this story about this fellow had tongue cancer and so right before the

[00:05:12] surgery was to take place where they were going to remove his tongue, the doctor said,

[00:05:17] I want to ask you, do you know what you're going to say is your last words because the

[00:05:21] words you utter here in the next minute or two are going to be the very last words

[00:05:25] you can ever speak because we're removing your tongue?

[00:05:28] And do you know what the guy said?

[00:05:30] Hmm, let me think about that.

[00:05:32] Okay, I got it.

[00:05:35] Thank God for Jesus Christ.

[00:05:39] Tonight when you say your prayers when you go to bed, thank God that the Son of Man came

[00:05:45] not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

[00:05:52] And that is why Jesus Christ came to this world.

[00:05:57] Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ and that is today's Daily Truth.
