Matthew 27:1-2 - The Jewish leaders sent Jesus to Pilate early on Good Friday morning. They wanted the Romans to be blamed for Jesus being put to death. But really, who ultimately should be blamed for the crucifixion of Christ?

[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily. This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman.

[00:00:07] Hi everybody, welcome back to Daily Truths. We're in Matthew chapter 27 verses 1 and 2.

[00:00:13] We've been in Matthew chapter 26 for a long time. Now we're in Matthew chapter 27 finally,

[00:00:18] and this is what it says. When morning came, in other words, Good Friday morning, when morning came,

[00:00:23] all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.

[00:00:29] And they bound him and led him away and delivered him up over to Pilate the governor.

[00:00:35] Now, what can we say about this? This meeting took place in the morning. Remember, they had a meeting,

[00:00:40] if you will, the night before about one o'clock, two o'clock in the morning. Then they went to bed

[00:00:44] and they said to make this official, we got to meet in the morning because according to Jewish tradition

[00:00:48] and law, it was only a right and proper meeting if it happened in the morning. So they bind him,

[00:00:55] they bind him and then they take him off to Pilate. Now, what do we know about Pilate? His home was in

[00:01:01] Caesarea maritime, which means it was on the northeast coast of the Mediterranean Sea, an absolutely gorgeous

[00:01:08] palace. But he was also the governor of Judea. And now he comes to Jerusalem. Why? For the Passover to

[00:01:15] make sure there weren't any riots and hostility against the Romans during the Passover. So he's in

[00:01:21] Jerusalem for the Passover. And only he had authority as a Roman official to put someone to death. Okay.

[00:01:30] Now, what were the charges that the Jews were bringing against Jesus? We've already talked about

[00:01:34] that. It was blasphemy that he claimed to be God incarnate, God in the flesh. But their trump card with the

[00:01:41] Romans was, and by the way, they didn't get along with the Romans and the Romans didn't get along with

[00:01:45] them. But their trump card was, he claims to be a king and he is opposed to Caesar. And so they

[00:01:51] basically said, we want the Romans to put him to death, not us. So that we're not, we're not blamed

[00:01:56] for killing Jesus. That was their whole idea. They didn't want to be blamed by the masses for killing

[00:02:02] Jesus because Jesus was so popular. Remember just five days before he came riding triumphantly into

[00:02:09] Jerusalem on a donkey. Remember? And the people said, Hey, Lozana, son of David, blessed is he who comes in

[00:02:14] the name of the Lord. So many people already were proclaiming Jesus as Messiah. That's why they met at

[00:02:21] night, kind of in stealth to make sure that the masses did rebel and riot against them. And they didn't

[00:02:27] want to be blamed. They didn't want to be responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus. Okay. They didn't want to take

[00:02:33] the blame. The blame game. Isaiah chapter 53 says this, listen to this. He was wounded for our

[00:02:42] transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement that brings us peace was placed upon

[00:02:50] him and by his stripes, we are healed. What does that mean? That means that he went to the cross

[00:02:57] in our place. He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised much more than bruised for our iniquities

[00:03:05] and the punishment that we deserve for our sin was placed on him. And by his scourging and dealing

[00:03:12] with everything he had to do to go through that crucifixion by his scourging, by his death,

[00:03:18] we have spiritual healing, namely forgiveness of sins and the promise of everlasting life. Listen to this.

[00:03:23] The Bible says in that same passage, all we like sheep have gone astray. All we have turned to our

[00:03:30] own way, but the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Here's the bottom line, my friends.

[00:03:37] You know, the Jews didn't want to be blamed for the crucifixion of Christ, right? They said, okay,

[00:03:42] blame the Romans. Let's send them off to the Romans. Let them be responsible. Let them be blamed. But here's

[00:03:48] the thing. I should be blamed. You should be blamed for the crucifixion of Christ. Rightly so,

[00:03:55] because he went to that cross for us. We've said this before, that God was using all these characters

[00:04:03] to execute his plan to save the world through his son and save the world through his son. He did.

[00:04:10] Thanks be to God that the blame is on us, that Jesus was willing to go to that cross for us.

[00:04:17] And as a result of that, eternal life, forgiveness, peace with God, assurance of God's presence in our

[00:04:25] everyday life. When we mess up, we're forgiven. When we stray away, he seeks us. When we're afraid of death,

[00:04:31] he gives us eternal life. All these wonderful things that we have all because Jesus took the blame

[00:04:38] for our sin upon himself, upon the cross. So we have some really exciting stuff to talk about

[00:04:47] in Daily Truth. By the way, I think this is airing on June 3rd, I believe. Yeah. So, you know,

[00:04:53] it's a new year and boy, I can't wait to go through all these wonderful things that we're going to be

[00:04:58] going through in Matthew 27 and Matthew 28. The crucifixion of Jesus is coming up. The resurrection

[00:05:04] of Jesus is coming up. The ascension of Jesus, the great commission of Jesus is coming up. We have some

[00:05:10] cool stuff to talk about. And thanks once again for watching Daily Truths and supporting this or

[00:05:16] your prayers and maybe financial support if you feel so inclined. It is a blessing and an honor and a

[00:05:22] privilege. I've been doing this now for two and a half years and I love it. My wife said to me,

[00:05:26] she said, how many videos have you made? And I said, uh, 860 or something like that.

[00:05:33] But I wake up every morning so excited to share the word of God with you.

[00:05:38] It's a privilege, an honor, and a blessing to do this in my retirement. Have a wonderful day in

[00:05:44] the Lord Jesus Christ. And that is today's Daily Truth. Thank you for tuning in to Daily Truths
