[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman
[00:00:07] Hi everybody! Welcome back to Daily Truths. What did the term when Jesus said, my time was at hand, my time has come, what did that mean? We pick up our reading in Matthew chapter 26. By the way, you're going to learn a lot of stuff today from this DT stuff that I didn't know. And if I didn't know it, you probably didn't know it either, but maybe you did, but you're going to learn a lot of stuff today.
[00:00:28] So, Matthew chapter 26 verses 17, 18 and 19. Now, on the first day of the unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus saying, where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover? He said, go into the city to a certain man and say to him, the teacher says, my time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and they prepared the Passover.
[00:00:55] Now, again, we're going to be talking about here in a couple minutes. What does it mean that Jesus' time was at hand? You probably already know, but we'll further explain that here in just a minute.
[00:01:04] Now, what can we say about this? Luke identified Peter and John as the disciples who went into Jerusalem to prepare the Passover. So they went early in the morning, probably seven or eight in the morning because there was a lot of preparation to do.
[00:01:17] What did they have to do? They had to get a lamb. It had to be sacrificed, if you will, or slaughtered near the temple in Jerusalem.
[00:01:25] They had to take it back to that man's house. We'll talk about him in just a minute. Had to take it back to that man's house, cook it, obviously get it ready.
[00:01:32] Get the unleavened bread, the wine, the bitter herbs and spices, all the kinds of preparation they needed to make.
[00:01:38] And so they left early in the morning. Now, Jesus said a certain man here in the book of Matthew, but in Mark, he identifies that guy as a guy who is carrying water, a water jar.
[00:01:49] Now, historically and traditionally, water was usually carried by women.
[00:01:54] Waters, jars of water was carried by women.
[00:01:56] But Jesus identified this guy as a man who is carrying water.
[00:02:01] Now, was this prearranged? Had Jesus gone to Jerusalem the day before, found this guy, knew he was going to be carrying water so that he could be identified as such?
[00:02:10] Or was this a prophetic word that Jesus had made, knowing indeed there was going to be a guy carrying a jar of water?
[00:02:16] Either way, Jesus was ready to go and he identified the person whose house they would celebrate the Passover at as a guy who is carrying water.
[00:02:25] Now, what day was this? This is very interesting, guys. Don't miss this.
[00:02:31] Passover historically in the early church in Jesus day, listen to this, took place on the 15th day of Nisan.
[00:02:38] The 15th day of Nisan is the 15th day of April.
[00:02:43] So the Passover, Jesus with his disciples celebrating the Passover was the 15th day of April.
[00:02:49] That would put the crucifixion on the 16th day.
[00:02:54] Here's another thing about the Passover.
[00:02:57] It began at six o'clock on that Thursday and ended on Friday at six o'clock.
[00:03:03] That means as Passover was being celebrated by people in Jerusalem, the Passover lamb, Jesus Christ, the son of God who would take away the sin of the world,
[00:03:12] was crucified, was slain on the cross at the very same time on the very same day as people celebrated the Passover lamb by eating it.
[00:03:23] On that day. Wow. How cool is that?
[00:03:26] Now, let's talk about this.
[00:03:29] Jesus said, my time has come.
[00:03:32] Now, there's many times in the New Testament when it says this, his time had not yet come.
[00:03:37] His time had not yet come.
[00:03:39] There is a time when they're ready to apprehend Jesus when he declares himself to be the son of God.
[00:03:43] And he slipped right through their midst.
[00:03:45] Why? Because his time had not yet come.
[00:03:47] Now, after three years of ministry, it was time for him to go to the cross.
[00:03:53] Right.
[00:03:53] So his time was at hand.
[00:03:56] And so he celebrated his last meal with his disciples.
[00:04:01] And what meal was it?
[00:04:02] The Passover meal.
[00:04:04] How cool is that?
[00:04:05] That's why we call not only the Lord's Supper, the Lord's Supper.
[00:04:09] We also call it the Last Supper because the last supper that he ate with his disciples was the Passover meal.
[00:04:16] And in that supper, he instituted his supper, the Lord's Supper, the Last Supper on that very night.
[00:04:25] Now, let's talk about ultimately why Christ said, my time is at hand.
[00:04:30] My time has come.
[00:04:32] What time?
[00:04:33] Time for him to be crucified.
[00:04:34] Why was he crucified?
[00:04:36] Because sin had to be paid for.
[00:04:38] And as we've said so many times, he was a holy, unblemished lamb, perfect sacrifice for our sin.
[00:04:44] So bottom line of this devotion today is thank God that Jesus time had come.
[00:04:51] That after three years of miracles and prophetic statements and parables and teaching and discipling and ministering to people,
[00:05:00] finally, the ultimate purpose of his mission was going to be realized to go to the cross to die for sinners like you and me.
[00:05:10] Indeed, his time had come and he was ready to execute God's plan for salvation.
[00:05:16] And so to the cross, he went as the unblemished lamb to save our souls, to open up the gates of heaven and win for us eternal life.
[00:05:26] Thanks be to God that his time had come.
[00:05:30] And that is today's Daily Truth.
[00:05:33] Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ.
