Have Your Sins Been 'Loosed"? | Matthew 18:18

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I had a heart attack every Monday and I came into our Monday meeting and I felt incredibly

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_00]: guilty about something. I can't remember what, but I just poured out my heart to him and

[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: he listened intently and his eyes were fully focused on me and I was sharing my heart.

[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Have you ever had that where you're just feeling so guilt, so much guilt and so much remorse

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and regret about your past and some decision that you made or some sin that you carried

[00:00:56] [SPEAKER_00]: out that you just feel so guilty about it and it's weighing on you and you're troubled

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_00]: by it and so you pour out your heart to a friend and you tell them what you did and you're

[00:01:08] [SPEAKER_00]: anticipating maybe getting a word of correction or rebuking, but they look at you and they

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_00]: can tell that you are truly sincere in what you're saying and your heart is breaking

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_00]: and the shame and guilt is very real and what do they say?

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Well in Matthew chapter 18, Jesus says these words,

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_00]: loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. What's that saying? When someone comes to

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_00]: us and they are not remorseful and regretful and don't feel any shame or guilt about what

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: they've done and obviously what they've done it's sinful, it's wrong but they don't feel

[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_00]: any regret or remorse about it. They don't apologize, they don't repent, they don't affirm

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_00]: their faith in Jesus then there's no forgiveness or grace conveyed to them.

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: The grace of God is bound to them because of their unrepentant heart and their unbelief,

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_00]: but if someone, according to this, if someone is broken by their sin and truly repents of their

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_00]: sin then the grace of God is loosed by that person who hears that confession and they can

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_00]: proclaim to that person that they are loved and forgiven, redeemed and accepted because what Jesus

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_00]: has done for them. Here's the thing today if you are feeling any guilt or remorse about your

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_00]: past, about the past mistakes of your life I want to proclaim to you this very powerful word.

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Your sins based on the finished work of Jesus, based on his life, death and resurrection,

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_00]: your sins are forgiven as far as the east is from the west God has removed them from his

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: memory bank he's drowned them in the sea of his forgetfulness Jesus died for that here's

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_00]: the thing when you're sitting with a friend and you've confessed your sin I pray that their

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_00]: believers who can truly loose the grace of God to you unbind the grace of God to you convey

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: forgiveness to you so that you can be freed of the guilt and remorse shame and regret

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_00]: of your past. That's what I'm doing for you today. You can leave your shame and guilt

[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_00]: at the foot of the cross knowing that Jesus paid the full penalty for it when he died there for you.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: So I was with my friend Larry McGurr and when I was done kind of talking about my regret and

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_00]: remorse about my past do you know what he did? He looked at me straight in the eyes and he told

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_00]: me this Dave Jesus died for sinners Jesus died for you and based on what Christ has done I proclaim

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_00]: to you that your sin is forgiven in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit and when he was

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: saying that I had tears in my eyes you know it was just so great because I proclaimed that every

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_00]: week at Mount Hope or at Peace Lutheran where I was at before I proclaimed that every week and

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_00]: in the absolution and confession time and it's powerful but to hear that one on one from another

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_00]: brother sister in Christ is a powerful thing right? And so I pray that you have someone in your life

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_00]: maybe a husband maybe a wife maybe a dear friend that when you're feeling guilt and remorse

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_00]: about your past you can openly and transparently talk about it and then they can lovingly

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_00]: convey to you that your sins are forgiven. In the grace of God awesome isn't it wonderful to know

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_00]: that despite our past and despite the sins that we've carried out God loves us just the same.

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Basking that today rejoicing that today share that with other people today God so love the

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_00]: world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him will not perish

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_00]: but have everlasting life. If we confess our sins God is faithful and just and will forgive

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: our sins and cleanse us from all in righteousness that is the grace of God being loosed on you
