[00:00:00] Real Truth Daily This is Daily Truths with Dave Ahlman
[00:00:07] Hi everybody, welcome back to Daily Truths. Our scripture reading for today is found in the book of Matthew, chapter 26, verse 47. While he was still speaking, remember, Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane. He's talking to his disciples, Peter, James, and John. He says that soon he's going to be leaving. Soon he's going to be apprehended. And sure enough, look what happens in verse 47.
[00:00:30] While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Swords and clubs? Against God incarnate? This is like an ant holding up a grain of sand to an elephant saying, I'm going to take you on. This is like a bunch of two year olds saying, we're going to take on the Denver Broncos in a football game. How ridiculous, swords and clubs. And Jesus could have said, don't you have to take on the Denver Broncos in a football game?
[00:01:00] Don't you know who I am? Don't you know I created the universe, the hills and lakes and the forests and the trees and the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea? I made it all. Don't you know who you're talking to? Don't you know that I made you? That I know the very number of cells in each one of your bodies, all the hairs on each one of your heads.
[00:01:20] I know exactly the number. Don't you know that I could disappear right in your midst and you'd never find me? You'd never catch me? Don't you know that I'm God incarnate, the promised Messiah, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords?
[00:01:34] He could have said that. He could have said, put your clubs and swords down. I know where this is leading. And I know that I have to be led there to a trial, to a hill, to a cross, to an excruciatingly painful death.
[00:01:53] I know where this is leading. You and I have a weapon in our hands too. Not a sword or a club, but a hammer.
[00:02:03] You see, our sin hammered Jesus to the cross. Our bearing false witness, our covetousness, our impurity, our greed, our materialism, our idolatry, our anger, our wrath, our malice, our slander, our abuse of speech, and on and on and on.
[00:02:26] Indeed, our sin nailed him there. But his love kept him there. He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities.
[00:02:37] And the chastisement that brings us peace was placed upon him. And by his stripes, we are healed.
[00:02:44] Jesus Christ, being hammered to the cross by our sin, went willingly, uncomplainingly, yes, joyfully, yes, sacrificially. Why?
[00:02:55] Because he wanted forgiveness to be ours. He wanted us to have peace with God. He wanted the gates of heaven to be open to us.
[00:03:03] And so he did it. Our sin hammered him to the cross.
[00:03:08] But he stayed there because he knew, as I said before, that our salvation hung in the balance.
[00:03:16] And he did it for us.
[00:03:19] Thanks be to God on this precious day for this incredible, unspeakable gift.
[00:03:28] We've got a weapon in our hands, not a sword, not a club, but a hammer.
[00:03:35] And Jesus comes to us in the midst of our sin.
[00:03:39] And he says, I died just for that.
[00:03:46] And that is today's Daily Truth. Have a great day in the Lord Jesus Christ.
